Transition is a programme that supports boys aged between 12 and 16 going through the transitional stages from childhood to adulthood; a stage known as ‘adolescence’.
In our culture there are no traditions or rights of passage that encourages boys to move through the stages of childhood to adulthood. In Jewish tradition, when boys reach the age of thirteen, they experience the Bar mitzvah. This tradition marks the end of childhood and they begin a journey towards adulthood, taking responsibilities for their own actions. Without the influence of positive male role models, boys can struggle to find their sense of identity and what it means to grow up as a man in today’s society. The programme is designed to support, develop and encourage boys through these stages.
The aim:
- To walk along side and support boys going through the stages of adolescence
Transition bases its value’s on the Christian faith and we believe in a living God who:
- created all things
- wants to see us grow in to the people he intended us to be
A group of 4 participants will journey through 3 stages of development and will be supported in making decisions, overcoming fears and evaluating personal progress.
The 3 Stages:
Stage 1: Personal
Using Dartmoor National Park and Chudleigh Rocks as our learning environment this first stage of the programme focuses on ‘character building’. Rock climbing, abseiling and team building challenges are provided to help develop confidence and encourage communication and teamwork skills.
Stage 2: Spiritual
The second stage provides opportunities for participants to ‘explore’ spirituality. Participants will be shown the necessary skills needed to build a shelter, make a fire and cook a meal. Participants will sleep out ‘alone’ overnight in their shelters and record their experiences in a journal (this is a fully supervised exercise). Participants will then have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and go deeper in discussion about understanding themselves, others and God.
Stage 3: Social
The final stage focuses on ‘reflection’ and draws on experiences and skills gained throughout their journey on Transition. Participants will be invited to give a short talk and present their experiences to a small crowd of men from local churches. PowerPoint, photographs, activity equipment and journals can be used as visual aids.
Transition meets three of the Every Child Matters criteria: Being Healthy, Staying Safe and Enjoying and Achieving. The programme can be delivered as a schools based project and can be adapted to meet the needs of the curriculum.
PD+ is a Personal Development programme aimed at under achieving pupils that find it difficult to interact with their piers and who lack confidence and self-esteem. The programme uses team building challenges and problem solving tasks as a tool to help develop confidence, communication and leaderships skills. A 10-week programme was delivered at Teignmouth Community College in Devon as part of the ASDAN award / Inverteign Primary School as part of the Dont Stop Me Know Initative.
"The team challenge showed me things about myself I didn’t know I had, but it also showed me things I need to work on".
"I never thought I could have so much fun while being soaked to the skin".
"I did something I never thought I could do".
"After I had done the abseil, I feel I have grown in confidence".
