JANUARY 2010We hope you enjoy reading this first newsletter of 2010.
HOLE IN THE WALL
The run up to Christmas at the Hole in the Wall was really hectic.
Throughout November a number of young people were putting together some shoeboxes to be sent to young people in the former Eastern Europe. We produced over 15 shoeboxes & these were sent via Samaritans Purse.
At the end of November another group organized a talent show to be held in aid of Children in Need. The young people arranged everything from publicity to contacting the Mayor to present the prizes, and comparing the evening and deciding who would be the judges.
In all over 80 guests came to watch the ‘Dawlish got talent’ show. They were presented with a varied programme from dancing to singing and telling jokes.
Cllr Geoff Wills came and presented the prizes and he was impressed at the talent on show.
“it was great to see young people enjoying themselves” was a comment heard during the evening.
In the end over £178 was raised for Children in Need.
Also in November a sponsored abseil took place down the side of St Gregory’s church tower—8 young people were brave enough to have a go and over £200 was raised for Hole in the Wall. Thanks to Leon for overseeing the abseil, and the Church Wardens and Vicar of St Greg’s for allowing us to abseil down their tower
FRIENDS of TEENBRIDGE PROJECT
n our last newsletter we wrote about the Friends of Teenbridge Project. As a result of this we now have 48 ‘Friends’ who commit to give finance regularly to the Project.
This finance is crucial to the long term well being of the Project. In these hard economic times where money from trusts and grants is harder to get it is vital that we can rely on local supporters in this way.
If you would like information about how to become a ‘Friend’ or if you know someone who you think would like to become a Friend please contact Su Twigg (01626) 777310. She will contact them and inform them of what it entails and how quick and easy it can all be set up.
KINGSTEIGNTON
A new Rock sport programme is being planned for February start.
Progression is planned into the Rock sport programme as the young people improve and gain confidence.
Rock sport 1 is an introductory level course where young people climb on an indoor climbing wall in Ashburton. They learn the basics of safe climbing and develop team work skills.
Rock Sport 2 is more advanced with young people climbing and abseiling on Dartmoor.
Rock Sport 3 involves the group undertaking a weekend expedition involving camping walking and climbing.
Leon & his team of volunteers have also devised Rock Sport+ for those young people who want to attend. RS+ is a climbing youth alpha with time spent climbing & then discussing various aspects of the Christian faith.
From a parent:
“I want to convey my thanks and support for the work you are doing…. the programme has completely engaged my son and he eagerly awaits each session…its great to offer them opportunities that provide a challenge, promote personal development whilst teaching new skills and good values… I hope you continue to build on the work you are doing and offer these opportunities to many more young people in our community”.
If you know any teenager who would like to be involved in Rock Sport programme get in touch with Leon.
Isensation & SPOTLIGHT in Teignmouth
Two new courses will start this month in ‘The Underground’ at Teignmouth Baptist church.
iSensation and Spotlight.
These will be for young people aged 11—15 years and for both programmes there is a limited number of places available.
iSENSATION is a multimedia course where young people learn how to devise a storyboard for a film, then act it out and filming it. Once it is filmed they will learn how to edit it using programmes on our Apple Macbooks. They also learn how to make and record a music soundtrack using the ‘garageband’ programme.
At the end of the course the films are ‘premiered’ to an invited audience of friends and parents/family.
Each young person will get a certificate and a own copy of their film on dvd.
Spotlight is a totally new music course where young people learn how to write their own songs, they are formed into small bands and after practice have the opportunity to record their music on to cds. At the end of the course the young people have a presentation evening where they can show of their musical skills to an invited audience.
